Insider View: Why we should never stop learning

On my first day at work in August 1975, my father, Ron Quayle, decided that he would give me a lift to work which was very gracious as it was well out of his way. This was to be, he told me, the one and only time this would happen as I was now a working man in my own right and had to use the bus from now on. But on the way, as the caring Dad he was, he decided to impart to me words of wisdom now I was to begin that long journey of working for the next 45 years.

One of those pearls of knowledge was to never stop learning and never think that you know it all.

Having now worked for more than 40 years, I have often thought of Dad’s words and smile when I realise how true they were and I now hear myself saying the same to my own children as they apply to all aspects of not just work but life in general.

I have worked in the Recycling and Waste Management Industry for 15 years now and I have seen great changes since 2003; these have required our business to change with the ever growing and dynamic requirements of our customers and the market in general.

However, the ability to change and move with customer needs comes from having experience and having that key ingredient to success which is knowledge.

This comes from learning all along the way, and our business, with over 35 years of trading, has learnt a great deal. A few examples are:

  • Landfill Tax was introduced in 1996 by Conservative Secretary of State for the Environment, John Gummer, and was the UK’s first environmental tax. This was one of the driving factors for businesses to be far more focused on their environmental responsibilities and recycling became common terminology in the UK. Printwaste, a recycling company and not purely a collector who landfilled all waste, were able to offer true recycling services long before any other company in our trading area.
  • We were constantly asked many times to be a single supplier of waste services to our customers and ended up sub-contracting landfill waste collections.  However, this waste was landfilled and we are a 100% recycling company so we bought compaction vehicles, collected this waste stream ourselves and delivered it to a waste-to-energy incinerator.
  • In 1998, the Data Protection Act was embedded in law. Many of our customers from whom we were collecting paper for recycling purposes were from the legal and financial sectors so we approached them with the offer of a secure shredding service. Not only was this offer taken up, we used our early experience to now own a bespoke high security facility and fleet of mobile shredding vehicles. In fact, our standing within this sector has grown so much now that our MD, Don Robins, is a board member of the British Security Industries Association (BSIA).

We continue to expand our horizons in our market place and are currently very active with our customer base with the new General Data Protection Regulations, advising and supplying compliant processes with them and also the new words on the block, The Circular Economy, as we look at ways to re-use the waste we collect by giving them another use.
