3 UK campaigns and initiatives fighting the war against plastic

June – a month of sunny days (hopefully), BBQ-filled tums (definitely), and highly appreciated dads aplenty. Not forgetting the start of the Fifa World Cup of course. But that’s not all this month is about. June also plays host to two very important days for the planet – World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. And this year, both days had very similar themes, with the former focusing on ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, and the latter on how ‘to prevent plastic pollution and encourage solutions for a healthy ocean’.

With summer holidays on the horizon, that same ocean will be teeming with people, wanting to cool off and relax in the water. Do we really want to share that space with a load of plastic waste? No – and neither should the animals living there. So, it’s time for us all to join the war against plastic. To get everyone motivated to do so, here are 3 UK campaigns and initiatives that are doing just that... 1. Plastic Fishing Having previously built the Queen’s barge, ‘Gloriana’, Mark Edwards MBE set about creating something a little different for London’s waters. His creation was called ‘Poly-Mer’, and holds the title for the world’s first recycled plastic boat. Combining the traditional with the modern, he used a recycled plastic waste called plaswood to create a thousand year old design. And now, that very boat cruises the Thames, searching for plastic waste to fish out of the river. And what’s better, you can take a trip on ‘Poly-Mer’ yourself, and help clean our waterways. For more information or to book a ride on this amazing invention, take a look at the website here. 2. #PlasticFreeFriday To help decrease plastic usage, environmental campaigning community, Friends of the Earth, came up with the concept of #PlasticFreeFriday. The idea is simple – for everyone, one day a week, to try and go plastic-free. This might mean saying no to plastic straws, taking your own reusable coffee cup to cafes, or buying food that isn’t wrapped in plastic film. Whatever it is you do, the campaigning group just want everyone to do something. And they’re hoping that, if people can do that one day a week, they’ll start to do it all seven. To find out more, and to take the pledge to go plastic-free yourself, check out their page here. 3. 100 Tons of Plastic Growing up in Whistable, Kent, 18-year-old George Heming has always loved the sea and sailing on it. So getting accepted onto the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race 2019 was a dream come true. The race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world, with yachts racing 40,000 nautical miles around the world. Enough for George to be focusing on, one might think. But no, he also wants to give back to those oceans he’ll be sailing in. To do so, he has set up ‘100 Tons of Plastic’ – a campaign to remove 100 tons of plastic from the ocean, and to sail around the world in cleaner, healthier seas. To find out more, and to help George get those tons down, take a look at his website here. And, of course, if you want advice on how to decrease yours or your business’ plastic usage, please do get in touch with us on 01242 588600 or at sales@printwaste.co.uk, and we’ll be happy to help. Alternatively, head to our designated web page for more information regarding our plastic recycling service here.
