How to responsibly dispose of extra household waste during lockdown

Garden Waste

Having now been in lockdown for over five weeks, as a nation, we’ve all had to find ways to keep ourselves entertained and busy within our own four walls – and garden if you’re lucky. Unsurprisingly, this has led to an increase in clear outs, DIY projects and gardening. So much so that, according to data collected 15th – 19th April by Rare Consulting, 38% of the UK intended to increase their engagement with home management and DIY activities, and 38% equally intended to do more gardening. This is, of course, time well spent (and hopefully some of you have been trying to make your gardens more eco-friendly, as per our recent blog post!), but it has also had some problematic consequences. Not only have hospitals seen an increase in serious eye injuries (yes, really), all of these activities are creating a lot of waste too. Even without the spring cleans, just by being in the house so much, doing our normal day-to-day activities, we’re all generating more waste than usual.

At the same time, most recycling centres are shut, the tips are closed, and many councils are having to cut down their services to prioritise essential collections, such as general waste and recycling. So, there are very few places for this extra waste to go. And, even when the tips and recycling centres do open again, it is highly likely social distancing will still be in play, meaning there will be large queues and long waiting times.

Our end, the last thing we want is for you to have to stop these activities, because you’re worried about what to do with the waste. Now really is the perfect time to have a sort out, look after the garden or do those bits of DIY you’ve been meaning to do for ages (just please wear eye protection!). It is a great way to keep busy, improve those four walls you’re having to stay inside, and get some things ticked off your to-do list before life gets busier again. So, how do you carry on with these without worrying about the amount of waste you’re generating?

Well, we have an announcement to make…

Over the last few weeks, at Printwaste, we’ve been working hard to create a new service for people in exactly the same position as you. So, without further ado, let us introduce you to our new home collections service! We are now collecting garden waste, confidential document shredding and recycling from households around Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury. All you have to do is get in touch with us on 01242 588600 or at info@printwaste.co.uk, tell us what you need collecting, and we’ll come and take it off your hands. It’s as easy as that.

10% of all sales from this service will also be donated to Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity to say thank you for all the amazing work they’re doing at the moment.

So, if we can help, just give us a shout.
